Hello, Darlings! Welcome back to the Queens Lounge.
It’s your favorite Fresno hostess, Cerinass Willdohim, coming to you with glitter, grace, and a whole lot of gratitude. Today, we aren’t just serving looks; we are serving legacy. It is February, which means we are diving deep into the celebration of Black History Month.
As a Black queer drag queen, this month hits different. It’s about honoring the shoulders we stand on—the activists, the artists, and the ancestors who paved the runway so we could walk it. But I know some of you have questions, and honey, I have answers. So, let’s get into the history, the meaning, and the magic of Black excellence.
Why We Celebrate: The Origin Story
You might be wondering, why is Black History Month celebrated and why was February chosen as Black History Month? It wasn’t just random! We have to give flowers to Carter G. Woodson, the man known as the father of Black History.
He launched “Negro History Week” in 1926 during the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. By 1976, when was Black History Month established as a national observance, it had evolved into a full month of recognition.
Icons, Legends, and The Moment
When we talk about famous Black history people, we often ask who is the most important Black person in history? The truth is, there isn’t just one! The tapestry of our culture is woven with so many threads of brilliance.
We have the athletes who defied gravity and expectations. We honor Muhammad Ali, who fought for justice as hard as he fought in the ring.
We look at Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, whose drive and excellence changed the game forever. And we certainly cannot forget the current GOAT, Simone Biles, who shows us that prioritizing mental health is a form of strength.
But we also celebrate the innovators and the organizers. We honor Mae Jemison, who took Black excellence all the way to the stars. We honor Ella Baker, the unsung hero behind the civil rights movement who taught us that strong people don’t need strong leaders. These are important people in Black History who remind us that our potential has no ceiling.
Celebrating in Style (and at School!)
Now, I know my teachers and creative parents out there are looking for ways to get the younger generation involved. If you are searching for Black History Month door decorating ideas or creative Black History door ideas for the classroom, think about themes that celebrate “Black Joy” or “Afrofuturism.”
For the little ones, Black history coloring pages and a Black history month word search are fabulous ways to introduce these names and faces early on. You can find plenty of resources online (just search for Black History Month coloring pages) to help spark those conversations.
The Queer Black Perspective
Why do we celebrate Black History Month from my perspective? Because for a long time, the narrative was narrow. Today, we celebrate the fullness of Black identity. As a drag queen, I honor the queer Black ancestors who were at the forefront of every liberation movement but were often told to stay in the closet. We are here, we are Black, we are beautiful, and we are part of the history.
So, whether you are Googling facts about Black history month, reading up on famous Black people, or just supporting a local Black-owned business here in Fresno, make sure you do it with intention.
Happy Black History Month, Queens! Let’s make history today.
With Love and Lashes,
Cerinass Willdohim
