Hey there, my loves! It’s Cerinass, here. Today, we’re talking about an artist who took pain, trauma, and devastating losses and poured it all into the most gorgeous, raw, and honest music. He’s the voice of a generation that embraces emotional transparency. We are celebrating the phenomenal August Alsina!
You know how therapeutic it is when an artist just tells the truth? That’s the power of August Alsina. He is a celebrated Black R&B singer and songwriter who burst onto the scene with a powerful voice, raw lyrics, and a story of survival. More recently, he has redefined his narrative by publicly embracing his queer identity and non-monogamous lifestyle, proving that authenticity is the ultimate comeback. He taught me that your vulnerability is your greatest strength.

From New Orleans Trauma to R&B Superstar
August Alsina (born 1992 in New Orleans, Louisiana) had a brutal upbringing marked by immense poverty and constant loss. His father and stepfather battled drug addiction, and his brother, Melvin, was fatally shot in 2010. Melvin’s death was the catalyst that pushed August to move to Atlanta and pursue music full-time.
His early hits like “I Luv This Shit” and “Testimony” were deeply resonant because they were rooted in his personal trauma, hustling, and the struggle to survive. His music defined a new era of raw, emotionally exposed R&B.

The Challenge of Healing and Identity
August Alsina’s journey to becoming an icon is rooted in overcoming devastating health battles and breaking free from the rigid boxes of traditional masculinity in R&B.
In 2017, August revealed his battle with severe autoimmune disease, which causes liver failure and debilitating pain. This physical struggle forced him to slow down his career and focus on survival, leading to a period of intense personal reflection and prioritizing mental health.
The biggest public shift came when he was forced to address the massive media frenzy around his personal life. The intense public scrutiny eventually pushed him toward radical transparency about his romantic life and fluid identity.
In 2022, on a reality TV show, August publicly confirmed that he was in a relationship with a man, introducing the concept of “an unconventional love and unconventional partnership.” He later clarified that he sees himself as queer, stating that he doesn’t adhere to traditional labels and embraces a non-monogamous lifestyle. This act shattered the hyper-masculine expectations of the R&B genre, a huge step in the footsteps of artists like Frank Ocean who broke those initial barriers.

The Inspiring Triumph of the Truth-Teller
August Alsina’s enduring triumph is his commitment to being an open book, providing powerful representation for Black queer people navigating chronic illness and complex love structures.
By refusing to hide his health battles and his queer relationships, he has become a leading figure for emotional honesty in the Black community. He demonstrated that true strength comes from acknowledging pain and embracing who you love, regardless of expectations.
His recent music continues to be a testament to this journey, transforming personal anguish into art that resonates with fans who feel unseen. His courage is an extension of the groundwork laid by Black musical pioneers like Monifah Carter, who also bravely shared her truth with the R&B world.
Cerinass’ Takeaway
For me, Cerinass, August Alsina taught me that you don’t have to be perfect to be a star. You just have to be real. He showed me that when you stop hiding, you give others permission to live, love, and heal.
So, the next time you hear a voice that feels like it’s straight from the soul, remember August Alsina. Remember the icon who traded secrecy for sovereignty.
Stay fabulous, and keep pursuing your dreams!
